House approves $85,000 appropriation to keep Fort Douglas Military Museum open

Representative Wayne A. Harper, sponsor of HB129, said the museum is a statewide asset housing artifacts from campaigns ranging from the Civil War through the Persian Gulf and that ongoing maintenance and curation costs require state support. Harper said last year's stopgap funding of $35,000 ‘‘literally kept this museum from closing’’ and asked colleagues to approve an $85,000 ongoing appropriation to cover 1.5 full-time employees, utilities, maintenance and preservation work.
Supporters, including Representative Becker, emphasized the museum’s heritage value. Representative Arrington noted a conflict of interest on the record. The House voted to pass HB129; the clerk announced 55 yes votes and 6 no votes. The bill will be forwarded to the Senate for further action.
