House approves tuition-assistance proposal for Utah National Guard

The House adopted House Bill 292 on Feb. 6 to provide tuition-assistance incentives for members of the Utah National Guard.
Representative Bradley T. Johnson, sponsor of HB292, said Utah has about 740 unfilled National Guard positions and that the tuition program will help recruitment and retention. He offered a clarifying amendment (pink sheet dated Jan. 30) to direct the Adjutant General to consider recruitment and retention needs; the amendment passed by voice vote.
Supporters described the measure as fiscally beneficial: sponsor testimony noted increased Guard membership would bring federal wage dollars to the state and estimated related state economic returns. Multiple House members, including Representative Knudson, expressed personal support based on Guard service experience. Representative Johnson thanked Guard officials who worked on the measure.
The House recorded a vote of 68 yes and 0 no; HB292 will be forwarded to the Senate for consideration.
