Belton City Council voted Oct. 22 to allocate roughly $391,000 in interest earned on American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to a package of local projects recommended by a council subcommittee.
Finance staff told the council the city had set aside about $55,000 earlier for microtransit and that the interest balance available for local projects is roughly $391,000. The subcommittee recommended funding the following projects (amounts quoted are from the staff presentation and council discussion): a temporary Nolan Creek pedestrian bridge to activate Liberty Park (~$30,000), lighting and a multipurpose field at Heritage Park (lighting package cited at about $15,000 and other field work), a senior center renovation (about $100,000), two additional lighted pickleball courts with fencing and lighting (about $80,000), an LED conversion at Heritage Park to reduce energy use (~$50,000), and a $6,153 contribution for the Children's Advocacy Center.
Council members praised the selection as broadly beneficial and noted cost‑conscious delivery by city crews; the motion to allocate funds passed unanimously. Members also asked staff to consider sustaining support for recurring needs such as the Children's Advocacy Center in future budget discussions.
Next steps: staff and partners will implement projects per usual procurement and capital processes and report progress to council.
