The Big Spring City Council unanimously approved a resolution to suspend the proposed Dec. 19, 2024 effective date of Atmos Energy Corp., West Texas Division’s requested rate change, allowing the city time to study the filing and participate in commission proceedings.
Mr. Medina briefed council that Atmos had previously settled for a roughly $4.3 million increase in a past proceeding and that the company’s new request totals about $26.9 million, which staff said could translate to an average residential increase of roughly $16–$17 per month (about a 10% change in a sample calculation). Council adopted the resolution to authorize intervention and to hire legal and consulting services to represent the city’s interests in negotiations or litigation, as needed.
The resolution also authorizes the city to seek reimbursement of the city’s rate-case expenses from the company, and staff noted the Railroad Commission has called for a full rate study. The suspension allows time for review rather than immediate implementation of the requested rate change.
