Library staff told the council on Jan. 13 that the Hondo Public Library received a Family Place grant to create a space for children under age 5 and needs shorter, 3‑tier shelving to make the area safe and accessible. The director said the grant covered educational materials but not physical shelving, so a budget amendment from the general fund would be required.
The meeting packet included three quotes ranging from $16,007.65 to $22,004.86; staff recommended the lowest quote. Council members asked about quote validity (one quote in the packet had an October expiration date) and whether the grant would cover the cost. Library staff said the grant did not cover shelving and that a budget amendment would be submitted later.
Councilmember Mister Williams moved to approve the purchase of shelving for three areas (Family Place, junior/young adult area and Spanish collection) in the amount of $16,765 (lowest quote as presented); Mister Etwarte seconded. The motion passed by voice vote with no opposition. The council authorized staff to complete a budget amendment at a later date and noted that if the final invoice exceeds the approved amount, the library would return for an additional amendment.
