The Converse Economic Development Corporation has committed $125,000 in matching funds for a rehabilitation of the city pool and related park‑area upgrades, EDC Executive Director Alon Ballinger told the Parks and Recreation Commission on Dec. 9.
Ballinger said the EDC’s $125,000 will pay for work on the pool interior — including replastering and replacement of filters and pumps — and for repairs and amenities such as deck resurfacing, replacement diving boards and lifeguard stands. The EDC also plans to replace the existing perimeter fence with a picket‑style fence and install privacy screening, shade structures and new seating around the pool.
"We're putting in the matching funds, dollars 125,000 to have the interior of the pool replastered, the filters, the pumps, all of that replaced," Ballinger said, describing the scope. He told commissioners the work is intended to be completed in time for the upcoming pool season.
Ballinger said the architect selected seating and materials that are heat‑resistant and durable; he estimated roughly 16 loungers and about a dozen Adirondack‑style chairs would be added, with about 20 total seats added across the site. He also described renderings of two types of fencing — a picket fence for the majority of the pool and privacy screening along the side adjacent to bus parking — and showed color and furniture samples aimed at making the pool more family‑friendly.
The EDC requested that one to three commission members serve on a small planning group to help coordinate a reopening celebration and provide feedback. "If we could get 1 to 3 members, that would be great," Ballinger said, adding the EDC would like to start meetings in January and asked interested commissioners to contact him, Danny or Kat by email.
No formal action was taken by the commission on the presentation; Ballinger and staff said they will return with updates as the project moves forward.
Next steps: EDC and city staff will continue planning and begin coordination with any commissioners who volunteer; the commission will receive updates at future meetings as details and a timeline firm up.
