Kingsville updates administrative policy to allow certain personal-protection items and security officers to carry

The City Commission voted unanimously to amend Administrative Policy 890.05, renaming it "firearms and other weapons" and updating definitions and permissions for employee-held protective devices.
Staff explained the policy update defines firearms consistent with the Texas Penal Code, reiterates state law that allows employees to store firearms in vehicles on city property, and clarifies who may carry certain items. The policy allows appointment of security officers who may carry firearms at city commission meetings and permits employees to carry certain nonlethal items such as mace containers and dry stun devices while on city property in specified ways.
Commissioner Alvarez moved to approve the resolution amending the administrative manual; Commissioner Tanehosa seconded. During discussion a commissioner asked whether an employee named Mary could carry a pistol to work; staff responded that the policy does not allow arbitrary carrying of firearms by employees but does allow storage in vehicles consistent with state law and allows narrowly defined security officer appointments.
The commission recorded unanimous approval by roll call. Staff said there is no additional cost associated with this policy change.
