The Utah House voted to send to the Senate a bill directing the state to return the local portion of Olympic sales-tax collections above a $59 million threshold to cities and counties. Representative Yerra, the bill sponsor, told colleagues the change affects the local share (1/64) and will not alter the state portion, which remains in an Olympic fund until Dec. 31 when it reverts to the transportation fund.
“Approximately between $2,500,000 and $3,000,000 will be going back statewide to all the municipalities and the counties,” Representative Yerra said, referring to the collections above the $59,000,000 figure. He said the return would occur no later than Sept. 1 under the bill’s timetable.
Supporters argued the measure fulfills earlier promises to local governments and returns funds already collected beyond the threshold. Representative Jones said the House should “revert that money back” to local government “at the earliest possible time.” Opponents did not force a recorded roll-call challenge during floor debate, and the Speaker announced the bill passed and would be transmitted to the Senate.
The bill passed the House and will proceed to the Senate for further consideration.
