House Approves $100,000 for Old Irontown Heritage Park

The Utah House on Jan. 25 passed House Bill 32, approving a $100,000 appropriation from the General Fund for development of Old Irontown as a state heritage park.
Representative Bowman described Old Irontown (located about 25 miles west of Cedar City) as a historic iron-making site west of the Mississippi and said the Sons of the Utah Pioneers will donate the property to the Division of Parks and Recreation. Bowman said minimal services would be provided initially and that school groups and visitors already use the site.
The sponsor recounted the site's historical significance, including early iron production and surviving features such as a charcoal oven and blast-furnace foundation, and projected visitor increases if the site is formally incorporated into the Iron Mission State Park system. After floor discussion, HB 32 passed the House 51–19 and will be referred to the Senate for further action.
