The House paused legislative business Tuesday to read an official citation honoring Wayne Owens, the former U.S. congressman and public servant who died in December 2002.
The reading clerk recited the citation, which chronicles Owens' birth in Panguitch (May 2, 1937), his service in the U.S. House of Representatives, environmental advocacy, and work founding the Center for Middle East Peace and Economic Cooperation. The citation also noted his missionary service, legal career and years of public service in Utah.
Several members offered personal remarks. Representative Buffmeier invited the Owens family forward for recognition and Representative Goodfellow and others recounted personal stories about Owens' leadership on river cleanup efforts and his engagement with young people during his congressional service.
The House recessed for lunch following the citation and additional announcements.
