House creates education task force to review No Child Left Behind and related reforms

Representative Corey Holdaway presented House Bill 257, which would create a legislative task force to examine state responses to federal No Child Left Behind requirements, consider employer-coalition recommendations and other reports, and propose best-practice approaches for K–12 education. Holdaway said the task force would help districts prepare for implementation of federal mandates.
Representative Dilley offered an amendment to add the phrase "including the enhancement of charter schools" to the study language; Representative Holdaway accepted the amendment and also incorporated an amendment to adjust a numeric figure associated with the task force materials. Representatives supportive of the task force, including those who cited additional neutral analyses, said the group would be helpful during the interim.
The House voted on HB257 as amended; the bill passed with a large majority (reported 67 yes, 1 no) and will be forwarded to the Senate for consideration.
