House advances task force to study school building needs after debate over local control

The House approved Senate Bill 154, creating a legislative task force to examine school‑building needs, costs, and options to reduce design, construction and operating expenses. Sponsor Representative Jenny Farren urged members to forward the task force item to the Senate so senators could prioritize it. The bill passed 41 yes to 32 no.
Representative Shurtleff argued school building decisions — including bond and tax choices — are local matters for school boards and should remain outside state micromanagement. Farren responded that while local boards make bond decisions, the state participates in capital outlay and guarantees bonds and therefore has a role in reviewing statewide building needs and costs.
"This task force is gonna look into school building needs throughout the state, school building costs, and methods to minimize the cost of design, construction, operation, and a lot more," Farren said in urging passage.
The bill passed on the House floor and will be forwarded to the Senate for consideration.
