SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah House on Tuesday amended and passed its annual sunset reauthorization bill, HB37, restoring language related to the Utah Sports Authority and extending the repeal dates of several state entities.
Representative Greg Curtis moved to reinstate language deleted in the bill on line 140 concerning Title 63A Chapter 7 (Utah Sports Authority). During floor discussion Curtis described a range of extensions the bill makes — for example, extending the Commission on National and Community Service to 2014 and pushing the Medical Assistance Act and several other acts beyond their scheduled repeal dates.
Representative McGee asked for clarification about specific entities affected; Curtis read several lines from the bill to illustrate which sunset dates were changed. Curtis characterized HB37 as a housekeeping vehicle to prevent state programs from lapsing and to align statute with prior practice and court guidance where applicable.
After amendment and discussion, HB37 passed the House by a vote of 63 yes to 2 no and will be referred to the Senate for further consideration.
