The Utah House resolved into a Committee of the Whole Jan. 15 to receive a presentation from the Utah Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Commission. Representative David Clark moved the resolution to resolve into the Committee of the Whole for the Commission’s presentation; the motion carried.
Palmer from the governor’s office introduced commission members and the student essay contest winner. Tristan Smith, chair of the commission, thanked the House for the opportunity and introduced the statewide essay winner, Jalaiah Faubert. Faubert read her essay "My Dream," calling for safer streets, broader access to medical care and a community effort to teach children right from wrong. "My first dream is for everyone to feel safe no matter where they are," she said, and suggested community and parental engagement along with public safety measures.
The presentation was a ceremonial recognition of the commission’s Adopt-a-School program and showcased statewide student participation in MLK-related civic education.
