House approves one-time funding to reorder volunteer firefighter license-plate decals

The Utah House on Jan. 30 approved House Bill 268, authorizing a one-time use of funds from economic development and revenue appropriations to reorder special license-plate decals for volunteer firefighters, a measure sponsors said would address immediate inventory shortfalls.

Representative Menlove, sponsor, said Utah has roughly 8,000 firefighters and that about 85 percent are volunteers. He told the chamber that the inventory for the firefighter plate decals equates to roughly 1.36 years and that the firefighter organizations had been told they needed $14,500 to reorder stickers. "This legislation would allow that amount of money to be paid from funds generated and available for use through the economic development and revenue appropriations," Menlove said.

Representative Dougal asked whether the arrangement was a loan to be repaid as decals are sold or an outright appropriation; Menlove said this was an appropriation for now and that the House would consider mechanisms for a restricted account or loan mechanism in the future. Representative Allen spoke in support, noting the appropriations committee had prioritized the request. The House recorded a roll-call vote of 61 yes and 5 no; the bill will be referred to the Senate for consideration.
