House advances bill to expand accelerated-learning funds for small districts

The House on Feb. 13 voted unanimously to encircle and pass House Bill 123, which would expand funding available for accelerated-learning and Advanced Placement offerings in smaller school districts and charter schools.
Representative Ferri, sponsor of the bill, described the program as a grant mechanism to help schools with low enrollment in certain AP or accelerated courses cover the difference between average class sizes and smaller local enrollment. The sponsor said the program is meant to augment, not fully supplant, local programs.
The House adopted the encircled bill by voice vote; the Clerk announced the final tally as 71 yes, 0 no. The bill will be forwarded to the Senate for further consideration.
