House unanimously backs resolution encouraging parental engagement in education, recognizes PTA day

The Utah House unanimously adopted SCR5 on Feb. 24, a concurrent resolution encouraging parental engagement in the education of children. Representative Moss presented the measure and described research showing parental involvement is strongly predictive of student success. She said Utah code already recognizes parents’ primary responsibility for education and that the resolution reaffirms the legislature’s support for parents and community organizations such as PTA.
Multiple lawmakers rose in support and shared personal classroom or parenting experience. Representative Paulson, Representative Newbold, Representative Wilcox and Representative Watkins all spoke in favor, emphasizing volunteering, monitoring attendance, and homework support. Representative Moss noted it was also PTA Day at the Legislature and invited more than 200 PTA leaders at the Capitol to stand and be recognized.
Voting was unanimous: SCR5 passed the House 67–0 and will be returned to the Senate for the president’s signature.
