House approves air-quality task force to study Utah pollution

Representative Arendt, sponsor of House Bill 70, urged the Legislature to form a task force to study air quality and recommend Utah-specific solutions. “Air quality is a very important issue that impacts the health of our citizens,” Arendt said, framing the bill as a way to gather science and coordinate state and private efforts.
Arendt and supporters pointed to testimony the committee heard from business and public-health stakeholders, including the Economic Development Corporation of Utah and local industry leaders, who said air quality affects employee retention and economic development. Representative Briscoe and other members described personal health impacts and local inversion events; Representative Draxler and others emphasized the need for a coordinated legislative response.
Several members noted task-force funding and prioritization procedures: Representative Brown reminded the body that task forces are prioritized and funded at the end of the session and that passage does not guarantee funding until that process. Supporters argued the work would consolidate existing studies and provide a legislative repository of technical information to guide future policy.
After floor debate and comments from multiple representatives, the House voted to pass HB 70. The final tally was 55 yes and 16 no; the bill will be transmitted to the Senate.
