House designates 'Bridal Jetty' as Utah’s state work of art over objections

House members voted to designate the Bridal Jetty as Utah’s state work of art with proponents saying the site draws visitors, supports education and scientific research, and celebrates Utah’s artistic heritage.
Representative Edwards (floor sponsor) described the site’s history, educational value and tourism benefits, noting nearly 4,000 visitors in 2015 and partnerships with the Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands, the Great Salt Lake Institute, and Utah Museum of Fine Arts. “It matters in the areas of tourism and cultural impact and economic impact,” the sponsor said.
Representative Kristofferson asked whether the designation conflicts with a separate Senate bill seeking to name prehistoric drawings in southern Utah as the state rock art; Edwards said the measures are complementary. Representative Hawkes opposed the bill on principle, saying matters of personal taste and geography should not be elevated to state symbols.
The House passed HB 211 on final reading, 48–23; the bill will be transmitted to the Senate.
