Representative Albrecht presented HJR 2, a nonbinding joint resolution that encourages the federal government to consider relocating the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Forest Service headquarters to Utah. "The Department of Interior manages about 75 percent of the federal public land in the country," the sponsor said, arguing headquarters nearer Western lands could improve local input and efficiency.
Floor discussion included an amendment to add the phrase "preferably Southern Utah" to the resolved language; Representative Albrecht did not object and members supported the change to emphasize rural job creation. Supporters said the move could create jobs and bring federal decision-making closer to Western land issues. The floor exchange referenced federal land management law including the Federal Land Policy Management Act of 1976 when discussing agency authorities.
The House approved the amendment and passed the resolution as amended for transmission to the Senate.
