Senate amends motor-vehicle act to clarify replacement of special legislative license plates and passes bill

Senator Peterson presented Senate Bill 238, a Motor Vehicle Department housekeeping bill. He said the bill clarifies how licenses and titles are handled and includes language regarding special license plates issued to senators and representatives. "If a senator or representative is not reelected to office, the special license plates shall be surrendered to the department by December 31 of the election year," Peterson said, and he proposed adding language to make clear those plates "shall be replaced without charge."
Senator Moran questioned whether that precluded keeping a plate for display; senators discussed practical issues about plate replacement and use. The Senate adopted the amendment to add the replacement-language and then voted to pass the bill. The floor chair recorded final passage of Senate Bill 238 with 21 ayes, no nays and 8 absent; the bill will be sent to the House for their consideration.
