Senate passes substitute bill increasing penalties for repeat DUI offenses

Senators voted to pass substitute Senate Bill 4, a DUI penalty amendment introduced by Senator Sandra Lynn Richards that increases punishments for repeat offenders.
As presented on the floor, the substitute raises the penalty for a third conviction within 10 years from a class B misdemeanor to a third-degree felony, establishes a minimum fine of $1,000 and changes the required custodial time to 30 consecutive days. "It raises the penalty from class b misdemeanor to third degree felony. It puts a minimum fine of a thousand dollars. It changes the required prison time from 30 days to 30 consecutive days," the sponsor said while presenting the bill.
The substitute received recorded support in the Senate and, in the excerpted roll call, was recorded as passing with 27 ayes, no recorded nays and two absences; the secretary announced the bill will be sent to the House for further action.
