Senate approves substitute SB 78 on radiology practical technician licensing; sends bill to House

Senator Stewart presented Substitute Senate Bill 78, proposing amendments to the licensing framework for radiology practical technicians. Stewart said he had discussed the measure with the Department of Business Regulation and stakeholders including radiology technologists and that the language as written was understood by affected parties; he proposed sending the bill to the House so the House committee could further clarify language if necessary.
Senator Wortman questioned whether the bill would lower testing or training requirements and whether it blurred the distinction between two-year radiology technicians and licensed practical radiology personnel. Stewart replied the bill aimed to make standards clear and avoid requiring two-year technician coursework and examinations where that level of training is not necessary for the work assigned to licensed practical radiology staff.
After further floor discussion and a motion to call the question, the Senate recorded a roll-call vote showing 26 ayes and 3 senators absent; the measure passed and was sent to the House for consideration and possible further amendment in committee.
