Senate advances HB 16 to third reading after brief floor discussion

The Senate on Feb. 8 heard brief floor discussion on House Bill 16, a Centennial license plate amendment presented as by Representative Alexander, and placed the measure on the third-reading calendar.
Senator Stewart (floor presenter) explained county assessors’ concerns that the prior law terminated plate use after the centennial year, creating administrative turnover and discouraging purchases. He said amending the law to allow people to keep Centennial plates without a fee increase until Jan. 1, 1997, would both ease assessor burdens and "allow a dedicated credit to the Centennial Commission of $500,000."
Senators debated briefly and called the question. The clerk recorded the floor tally as "House Bill 16 shows 27 eyes, no names, 2 being absent," and the bill was placed on the third-reading calendar.
The Senate will consider final passage on third reading in a subsequent floor session.
