Senate approves committee report on extending ID-card renewals by mail for people with disabilities

Sen. Howell, the floor sponsor, told senators the bill responds to requests from disability advocates and the Americans with Disabilities Act community to ease access for individuals who cannot readily appear in person. The bill authorizes renewal through the mail for qualifying individuals and contains amendments allowing certain older residents to retain an ID card for an extended period.
Senators asked whether renewal-by-mail is the only change and were told that the mail-renewal option and a few technical corrections are the primary amendments. The Senate adopted the committee report and placed SB 11 on the third-reading calendar for final action.
