Salt Lake City — The Utah State Senate on Feb. 20 adopted Senate Joint Resolution 15 (SJR 15), an Olympism resolution promoting a values‑centered curriculum for schools and recognizing community leaders who helped develop the project.
Sen. David Steele led a committee of the whole to present commendations to Alma Welch, Rick Larson and Steve Young for work on a curriculum and a companion video and book titled (as described in the presentation) an Olympism package intended for distribution first to Utah schools and then nationally. Welch described the foundation’s work to promote ideals of “excellence, brotherhood and peace” and Rick Larson and others outlined the educational materials and publishing partnership.
Steve Young and other guests spoke briefly to the Senate. Steele moved the resolution for third reading; the body voted unanimously in favor (29 ayes) and the measure will be transmitted to the House for consideration.
What’s next: Sponsors said they would hand‑carry the resolution to the House and continue outreach to schools for implementation of the curriculum materials.
Direct quotes recorded on the floor include praise for Welch’s efforts and a description of the curricular materials that will be made available to Utah schools.
