The Utah State Senate on Feb. 6 presented an official citation honoring Arthur K. Smith for his service as the twelfth president of the University of Utah.
The citation, read on the Senate floor, credited Smith with advancing undergraduate education, raising private and research funds, improving faculty and student diversity, stewarding the university’s fiscal position, and helping prepare the campus for its sesquicentennial fundraising campaign. Senate leadership and multiple senators offered personal remarks of appreciation for Smith’s work and his relationship with the Legislature.
President Smith accepted the citation and said he and his wife felt "overwhelmed" and "deeply appreciative" for the recognition. He told the chamber that he would be moving to the University of Houston and said, "they simply made me an offer that I couldn't refuse," adding that the years in Utah had been "far and away, most rewarding of our lives together." The Senate recessed briefly into a committee of the whole to present the citation and then returned to business.
What happens next: The citation will be placed on the legislative record; Smith departs for his new post and the Legislature will continue its scheduled work.
