Senate declares 1998 'Year of the Farmer' with unanimous support

The Utah State Senate on Jan. 21 adopted SCR 3, a concurrent resolution designating 1998 as the Year of the Farmer and urging Utahns to recognize the role of farming and ranching in the state's economy and heritage.
Sponsor Senator Marin introduced the Utah Association of Conservation Districts members in the gallery and outlined the resolution's findings, which note that Utah farming and agricultural producers set an export record in 1996, a growing gap between available prime farmland and future population needs, and concerns about the average age of Utah farmers.
Senator Marin said the resolution also encourages support for local agricultural products and references milestone anniversaries for soil conservation districts. Senators on the floor voiced appreciation for conservation service volunteers and the role of small farms in Utah's communities.
The Senate moved the resolution up the calendar under a suspension of the rules and took a roll-call that the presiding officer reported as unanimous among those present; the measure will be transmitted to the House for concurrence.
