Chinese ambassador greets Utah senators, urges deeper educational and commercial ties

The Utah Senate received His Excellency Li Qiao Xin, ambassador of the People's Republic of China, in a Committee of the Whole during its Feb. 24, 1999 session. Senate leadership introduced the ambassador and invited him to address the chamber.
Ambassador Li thanked the Senate for its hospitality, referred to existing educational and business ties between Utah institutions and China, and said he was "so happy to find that we have such good cooperation between your state and many parts of China." He noted the number of Chinese students studying at Utah universities and expressed readiness to deepen mutually beneficial ties in trade and education.
Senators reciprocated the welcome, praised cultural and economic connections and noted plans for further meetings that evening. President Beatty observed the shared calendar milestone—the Chinese New Year—and both sides closed the brief exchange with invitations for future engagement.
The ambassador's appearance was a ceremonial event on the Senate calendar and did not involve formal legislative action.
