Senate advances scores of House bills and concurrence items; major appropriations moved forward

The Utah State Senate convened Feb. 26 and cleared a long consent and concurrence calendar, approving numerous House bills and several Senate measures and returning them to the House for enrollment or further consideration. President Brady directed many unanimous voice votes and the chamber used roll-call where required on amendments and appropriations.

Among the consent items and recorded votes the Senate moved: House Bill 25 (individual income tax deduction for self-insured health insurance) passed on roll call (24 ayes, 0 nays, 5 absent) and was returned to the House for signatures; House Bill 9 (classroom supplies appropriation, amended to limit per-teacher amounts) passed 26-0 with 3 absent after floor amendments limited payments to no more than $200 per teacher; the Senate also approved a package of education and public-safety bills under suspension of the rules after sponsors described fiscal notes and amendments.

The floor routinely began with sponsors briefly explaining fiscal impacts and priorities.
