SALT LAKE CITY — The Senate advanced Senate Bill 207 to the third-reading calendar on Feb. 17 after discussing a proposed appropriation to support a state military museum in Tooele County.
Senator Ron Allen, sponsor of SB 207, told the body Tooele County has the land and many of the exhibits already and is offering a three-to-one local match for a $2,000,000 facility. He said county commissioners have pledged that school classes will be admitted free and that the county will accept responsibility for ongoing maintenance and operations.
Senators raised concerns about recurring state maintenance obligations for facilities the state helps to seed, but the sponsor said the county committed to ongoing maintenance, so the state’s request was for a relatively small matching appropriation to get the building started. The bill’s roll-call passage to the third-reading calendar was recorded as 24 ayes, 4 nays and 1 absent.
Senators asked for clarity on long-term maintenance and how the appropriation relates to state capital budgets; the record shows the county’s pledge and the sponsor’s assurance that the funding would be cost-effective given local match and current vehicle availability for exhibits.
