Senate Approves $330,000 Request for Utah State Fair Park Maintenance

Senator Swaddell told colleagues that only 7 of 51 structures at the Fair Park are currently safe enough to rent to outside groups and recounted a 1993 Division of Facilities estimate of about $6,000,000 in maintenance and operations needs. The governor recommended $370,000; the fiscal analyst recommended $270,000 and the sponsor asked for $330,000 to keep the facility operational while a master plan and new anchor tenants (the Science Center and the Living Aquarium) take hold.
Senator Stevenson questioned why the appropriation was being sought outside the regular appropriations process; Senator Swaddell replied that the committee had not issued a final recommendation and the immediate maintenance need justified floor consideration. After questions, the Senate recorded a roll-call vote: 23 ayes, 2 nays and 4 absent. The bill will be prioritized among fiscal-note measures and moved to the third-reading calendar.
The sponsor said the appropriation is intended as a stopgap to keep operations going while longer-term plans are implemented.
