Senate advances multiple bills to third reading, approves consent items
Summary
During the Jan. 25, 2001 Senate session, lawmakers advanced a slate of bills — including HB 5, HB 20, HB 16, SB 17, SB 38 and others — to the third reading calendar or passed them on consent; several bills were circled for further work.
The Utah Senate moved a number of bills forward on Jan. 25, advancing several measures to the third reading calendar and approving consent items.
On the consent calendar, House Bill 5 (serious habitual offender program amendment) passed unanimously and was sent back to the House with the president’s signature. On the third-reading calendar, the Senate recorded passage or advancement of: House Bill 20 (state symbol recodification) — unanimous, 29 ayes; House Bill 16 (electronic government services for environmental quality) — unanimous, 29 yay votes; House Bill 17 (electronic government services, natural resources) — passed and referred to the speaker; Senate Bill 17 (highway construction bridal limit) — passed 25–4; Senate Bill 38 (winter road closure authority) — passed to third reading with amendment (25–2, 2 absent); Senate Bill 54 (education roundtable) — amended and passed to third reading (26 ayes); multiple other bills (SB 26, SB 7, HB 21, HB 27, HB 29, HB 32, HB 33) were either advanced, circled for amendment, or passed to the third reading calendar as recorded on the floor.
Several items were circled for further consideration (House Bill 19, House Bill 33 initially circled and later uncircled), and a number of technical and administrative bills were passed with little debate. The Senate recessed and later adjourned until 10 a.m. the following day.
