Utah Senate Gives Advice-and-Consent to Multiple Gubernatorial Appointments

The Utah Senate on Feb. 27 consented to a slate of appointments submitted by Gov. Michael O. Leavitt, confirming nominees to multiple state boards and commissions.
The governor’s letter, transmitted Feb. 6, 2002, proposed Jerry D. Olds as state engineer and included reappointments and new appointments to bodies such as the Board of Pardons and Parole, the Utah Housing Corporation board of trustees and several water conservancy district boards. The nominations were read into the record and introduced to the chamber by President Mansfield and others.
Senator Hilliard moved for advising consent to the governor’s list. After brief remarks in support — including a description of the importance of the Board of Pardons and Parole — the Senate held a roll-call vote. The motion passed with 24 aye votes, zero nay votes and five members absent. President Mansfield announced the result and extended congratulations to the confirmed nominees.
Curtis L. Garner was among those singled out in the floor text as present for the session; senators welcomed Garner and his companion to the chamber during introductions. The confirmations cover appointments with staggered terms and a range of responsibilities, from water and housing oversight to parole and pardons duties.
The Senate recorded the consent vote in open session and referred the enrolled instruments back to the House and the staff for signatures and completing the appointments process.
