Senate confirms Samuel D. McVeigh as Fourth Judicial District judge

The Utah Senate on 2004-02-17 confirmed Samuel D. McVeigh to serve as a judge in the Fourth Judicial District, following a unanimous recommendation from the Senate judicial confirmation committee.
The confirmation came after the governor transmitted the nomination under section 67-1-1, Utah Code Annotated. Committee chair Sen. Chris Butters told the Senate the committee "unanimously reports favorable recommendation" and praised McVeigh's experience, character and service. Sen. Butters said he "hasn't met a candidate that I'm so thrilled about" and urged confirmation.
Sen. Hilliard moved to confirm McVeigh to the Fourth District; a roll-call vote recorded 28 aye votes, no nays and one absence, and the nomination was confirmed. The body then resolved into a committee of the whole for Judge McVeigh to address the Senate. McVeigh introduced family members in the gallery and said he was "dedicated to public service" and would "apply the law" while treating courtroom participants "with dignity and respect."
The governor's letter transmitting the nomination was dated December 20, 2003, and the confirmation committee met on 02/16/2004 and reported favorably. Following the confirmation, senators offered congratulations and dissolved the committee of the whole. The Senate returned to the calendar work after the ceremony.
