Senate advances escape-amendment bill to third reading; attorney general requested changes to code

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Senate on Jan. 27 moved SB 73, a measure from the attorney general's office addressing statutory treatment of escape-related offenses and making a textual correction to the code.
Senator Hatch, presenting the bill, explained that prosecutors identified two separate code sections on aiding escape that could produce inconsistent penalties. The bill repeals the redundant provision so escape-related conduct is prosecuted under one section, aligning penalties with accessory rules. Hatch also noted the bill corrects a previously misspelled word in the statutory text.
Senators had no extended floor debate on the measure. The presiding officer announced a roll-call showing 25 ayes, no nays and four absences; SB 73 advanced to the third-reading calendar.
The bill will return for third-reading consideration and possible amendment.
