The Utah State Senate took time during its Feb. 28 floor session to recognize families of Utah service members killed in the recent conflict in Iraq.
Senator Hilliard introduced relatives and read names and brief tributes for multiple fallen service members, including Army Sergeant Mason Douglas Whetstone, Army Staff Sergeant Allen L. Rogers, Captain Nathan S. Dali, Marine Lance Corporal Cesar Machado Olmos, Marine Staff Sergeant James Calley, Marine Lance Corporal Michael J. Allred, Army Specialist David Goldberg and Marine Corporal Matthew R. Smith. Hilliard described aspects of their service and asked the Senate to rise and observe a moment of silence in their honor.
"We are thankful for the service and great sacrifice that [they] have given," Hilliard said while introducing the families. President Valentine and several senators thanked the families for their presence and the Senate observed a moment of silence.
The presiding officer ordered the tributes printed for senators' desks and, after the recognition, the Senate recessed briefly for the chamber to compose itself before returning to the legislative calendar.
