The Utah Senate narrowly approved Senate Bill 130 on Feb. 7, a measure allowing Salt Lake Airport Police officers to choose a 20- or 30-year retirement option.
Sponsor Senator Demetrij told colleagues the airport authority will pick up costs associated with the change and said the adjustment responds to recruitment and turnover concerns in airport law enforcement. Lawmakers questioned fiscal impact and whether the change would increase costs for travelers. "Is this the bill that only affects five people?" one senator asked; the sponsor said it affects a larger cohort and that an airport authority fund would cover the cost.
Senator Evans urged caution about proliferation of special retirement provisions across different employment groups and asked the body to consider fairness and long‑term system impacts. The Senate recorded a roll-call vote and the bill passed with 15 yes votes, 13 no votes and one absence. The bill will be referred to the House for further action.
