Utah Senate honors Bishop George H. Niederauer as he departs for San Francisco

The Utah State Senate on Feb. 8 read an official citation honoring Bishop George H. Niederauer after the governor and the legislature recognized his appointment as Archbishop of San Francisco effective Feb. 15, 2006. The citation, read into the record by the reading clerk, credited Niederauer with more than four decades in the priesthood and with expanding outreach to Utah’s Latino Catholic community, noting membership growth and the diocese’s parish and mission counts.
Senator Knudson moved the body into the Committee of the Whole to hear from Niederauer, who told senators Utah had become his home and thanked the Legislature for the honor. Niederauer asked members to extend welcome to his successor and spoke about his personal connections to the state. After his remarks the Senate dissolved the Committee of the Whole and, by unanimous voice vote, agreed to spread the words of the bishop’s prayer upon the Senate Journal.
The citation cited Niederauer’s academic background and prior ministry roles, referenced awards he has received and listed his service on bishops’ committees, including committees addressing the protection of children and communications. The citation was signed by Gov. Jon M. Huntsman Jr., Senate President John L. Valentine and House Speaker Greg J. Curtis.
The Senate’s formal recognition followed a reading clerk’s recitation of the citation and brief tributes from senators on the floor. President Valentine presided over the ceremony and the subsequent return to business as usual.
