SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Senate on Jan. 16 confirmed George M. Harmond Jr. as a judge of the Seventh Judicial District by a recorded vote of 29-0.
The reading clerk presented a gubernatorial appointment under Utah Code 67-1-1 from Gov. Jon M. Huntsman Jr., and the Senate Judicial Confirmation Committee reported a unanimous favorable recommendation. Senator Hilliard moved to confirm the nominee and several senators, including Senator Chris Butters and Senator Mike Dimitrich, spoke in support, citing the nominee's community ties and the committee's vetting process.
"We look at these people very critically, and we take our job as a third step in the judicial confirmation process, which is the only step done in public very, very seriously," Senator Butters said.
The roll-call vote was announced in open session: 29 yes, 0 nay, and the president declared the motion passed. After confirmation, the Senate resolved into the Committee of the Whole and invited Judge Harmond to address members; he thanked senators and pledged to serve the district and state.
The appointment was presented in accordance with Utah Code 67-1-1, and the Senate's action will be recorded in the Senate Journal as requested by a subsequent motion.
