Senate approves amendments narrowing smoke-free exemptions, sending SB 19 to House
Summary
Senate Bill 19, which would remove exemptions for bars, taverns, clubs and fraternals from the Indoor Clean Air Act, passed the Utah Senate on Jan. 19; after a roll-call correction the final recorded vote was 17 yeas, 12 nays and the bill was referred to the House.
Senators on Jan. 19 passed Senate Bill 19, a measure that narrows exemptions under the Indoor Clean Air Act by removing bars, taverns, clubs and some social organizations from the list of places exempted from the statute.
Senator Michael Waddups presented the measure, saying the bill “modifies the Clean Air Act and would allow fewer exemptions to the act, specifically taking out the bars, taverns, clubs, social clubs, and fraternals.” He offered the bill for final passage and the body took a roll-call vote.
The clerk recorded an initial tally (reported on the floor) of 16 yes, 11 no and 2 absent; following a later request to adjust votes by senators who were briefly out of the chamber, the clerk reconvened the count and the corrected final tally on the floor record was 17 yeas, 12 nays. President Valentine declared SB 19 passed and ordered transmission to the House for its further action.
Floor discussion was brief on Jan. 19; the bill will now be considered by the House.
