Maine described an intensive week of testing and an aggressive three-day chemotherapy regimen he had begun. He told the chamber doctors were optimistic that, if his body responds to treatment, he could be in remission by the end of August; he asked for the Senate’s prayers, cards and support as he undergoes treatment. "I've got a great medical team... I'm gonna beat this thing," he said.
Colleagues offered immediate support from the floor. The disclosure occurred in the course of routine confirmation business; the Senate completed its consideration of nominations and adjourned later in the session.
