Senate approves pilot for summer and after-school programs for children with disabilities

The Utah Senate passed Senate Bill 188, a pilot program authorizing community groups to provide respite care and summer and after-school programming for children with disabilities.
Sponsor Senator Bell told the Senate the bill is designed to “ameliorate some problems with the waiting list without having to go down and rank order” and would involve community partners to offer both summer and after-school respite services. He said the program was well received in committee but acknowledged a likely fight over funding.
Senator Butters called the bill “a great piece,” saying it acts as preventative support to help children before they reach crisis. After brief debate the sponsor moved final passage and the bill passed on a roll call; the clerk reported the vote as 25 ayes, 0 nays and 4 absent.
The bill will be referred to the House for its further action and will face appropriation decisions during budget deliberations, the sponsor cautioned.
