Senate approves affiliation of College of Eastern Utah with Utah State University

Salt Lake City — The Senate advanced a bill to affiliate the College of Eastern Utah (CEU) with Utah State University and rename the campus the Utah State University College of Eastern Utah.
Sponsor Senator Hinkins told the Senate the measure establishes CEU as a comprehensive regional campus of Utah State University, led by a chancellor appointed by the President of Utah State University, preserves career and technical education and adds a member to the USU Board of Trustees who must live in the USU-CEU service region.
Supporters said the affiliation follows extensive study and community input, preserves CEU’s community-college role while opening opportunities for expanded postsecondary education, research grants and alumni support that a four-year affiliation could attract. Senator Van Tassel and others said the change could revitalize higher education access in southeastern Utah, though they acknowledged short-term savings are unlikely.
After floor discussion and summation, the Senate recorded a unanimous recorded advance (24–0) and placed the substitute on the third-reading calendar.
