Michelle M. Christiansen was confirmed by the Utah State Senate to a seat on the Utah Court of Appeals on May 19, 2010, by a roll-call vote of 25 yeas, 0 nays and 4 absent.
The confirmation followed a favorable recommendation from the Judicial Confirmation Committee, which reported that it interviewed the nominee and found her fit to serve. Senator Jenkins told colleagues the committee gave a unanimous recommendation and moved the nomination to the floor for confirmation.
Supporters on the floor praised Christiansen’s record. Senator Romero said Christiansen had demonstrated leadership and community involvement and encouraged colleagues to support her elevation to the Court of Appeals. Senator Jenkins explained his vote on the record, noting a personal conflict of interest: “I will vote aye, but I also want to note a conflict of interest. I have a longstanding business relationship with the judge’s father-in-law,” he said before casting his vote.
Christiansen addressed the Senate in a brief Committee of the Whole hearing, thanking members and her family for their support and pledging to serve honorably. “I am blessed and I am honored to be here and to be standing in front of you,” she said.
After the vote, the Senate dissolved the Committee of the Whole and formally congratulated the nominee. The confirmation fills an appellate vacancy and moves Christiansen into active service on the Court of Appeals.
