Utah Senate confirms two Third District Court judges in special session

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah State Senate on Nov. 10, 2010 confirmed two gubernatorial judicial appointments to the Third District Court.
The Senate voted to consent to Charlene Barlow's appointment; the roll-call on her confirmation showed 20 'aye' votes, 0 'nay' and 1 absent, and the Senate "consented to the appointment of Charlene Barlow as a Third District Court judge." After that vote the Senate also confirmed Andrew H. Stone by a roll-call of 28 'yay' votes, 0 'nay' and 1 absent.
After each confirmation the chamber resolved into a Committee of the Whole to hear brief remarks. Judge Charlene Barlow thanked the nominating commission, Governor Gary R. Herbert and the Senate for confirming her, and said she would "do the best that I can to be fair, to be honest, to make wise decisions and to live up to the trust that's been given to me in this position." Judge Andrew H. Stone thanked the Senate for the "great trust" placed in him and acknowledged family and staff present in the gallery.
Both confirmations followed the Senate Judiciary Committee's favorable recommendations and were moved on the floor as separate consent motions. The Senate then returned to regular session after the Committee of the Whole was dissolved.
What happens next: With the Senate's consent recorded on the transcript, the appointments proceed to completion according to the state's judicial appointment and commissioning process.
