Casey Owen Anderson was sworn in to the Utah Senate on May 2, 2011, after Governor Gary R. Herbert appointed him to fill the vacancy in Senate District 28 created by the death of Senator Stoll. President presided over the ceremony and the clerk read the governor’s appointment letter.
Anderson rose to take the oath, stating his full name and repeating the oath to “support, obey, and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of this state” and to “discharge the duties of my office with fidelity.” After the oath, the presiding officer and colleagues congratulated him.
The Senate’s roll call earlier in the extraordinary session showed 28 members present and one absent, meeting the quorum requirement so Anderson could immediately participate in business. The session had been convened by a proclamation from Governor Herbert for the limited purpose of considering gubernatorial appointments.
No formal challenge to Anderson’s appointment was recorded on the floor during the session. The Senate resumed its scheduled consideration of multiple gubernatorial appointments following the swearing-in.
