Senate passes small correction to DUI license-suspension law (SB3003)

The Utah State Senate on Oct. 3, 2011 gave final passage to Senate Bill 3,003, a technical amendment to state law that corrects an erroneous date in the driver's-license suspension provisions for certain driving-under-the-influence offenses.
Senator Jenkins, sponsor of SB3003, told colleagues the bill rectifies a drafting error on line 111 of the statute where the year was left as 2011; the amendment changes that reference to 2009 to prevent inadvertent reversals of related citations. Jenkins described the change as "a small fix" intended to align the text with prior legislative intent.
Under suspension of the rules, the Senate considered SB3003 for second and third reading and final passage. The President announced the final tally as 25 yea, 0 nay, with four senators absent. The bill will be forwarded to the House for its consideration.
The action was taken during a short special session called by Gov. Gary R. Herbert. The Senate adopted its 2011 rules for the session and suspended long-title readings to expedite consideration of introduced bills.
Next steps: SB3003 moves to the House; no amendments to the substance of the DUI provisions were introduced on the Senate floor during this action.
