Senate unanimously backs joint resolution strengthening Utah–Israel ties and hears remarks from visiting rabbi

The Utah Senate on Feb. 17 passed Senate Joint Resolution 18, a measure recognizing and urging strengthened relations between Utah and Israel and urging the governor to consider a trade mission to Israel to explore economic cooperation.
Senator Bramble presented the resolution and introduced Rabbi Benny Zippel, Rabbi Joshua Aronson and representatives of the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee who were on the Senate floor. Under a suspension-of-rules motion, the body read SJR 18 for second and third time and passed it by recorded tally (21 yea, 0 nay; 8 absent) and forwarded it to the House.
The Senate briefly resolved into a Committee of the Whole for Rabbi Zippel to offer remarks; Zippel thanked the Senate for support, described historical and archaeological interests (excavations along the western side of the old city wall) and conveyed blessings to the body for its support of Israel.
Senators praised the resolution; several recounted personal experience on trade missions and encouraged colleagues to consider the cultural and economic opportunities the relationship offers.
Next step: SJR 18 will be forwarded to the House for its actions and the Senate staff will enroll the resolution.
