Senate adopts resolution urging U.S. support for Taiwan participation; Director General thanks lawmakers

The Utah Senate on Feb. 28 passed first substitute SJR 2, a resolution urging the U.S. federal government to support Taiwan’s meaningful participation as an observer in U.N. specialized agencies, programs, and conventions. The sponsor, Sen. Knudson, framed the resolution as an expression of Utah’s long-standing friendship with Taiwan and noted decades of cultural and economic ties.
Director General Jack Chang of the Taiwan office in San Francisco and members of the delegation were introduced and presented with Senate gifts. Director Chang addressed the Senate and expressed gratitude for Utah’s support, describing the relationship as one of shared democratic values and noting Taiwan’s desire to contribute to the international community. He thanked the Senate for adopting the resolution and wished the members well in the Year of the Dragon.
After adoption (27 yeas, 0 nays, 2 absent), the Senate resolved to a Committee of the Whole to hear Director Chang’s brief remarks and then dissolved the committee, escorting the delegation to the House to present the resolution there.
